Entrepreneur Isaacman has been voted in as the incoming leader of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, capping an atypical nomination process where the President put his name forward, withdrew it, and then put him forward again.

The billionaire, an private pilot who became the first private citizen to conduct a spacewalk, is also the first agency head in many years to come entirely from the private sector.

For many, the legacy of his time in office will be judged on one crucial test: whether it can send astronauts to the Moon ahead of China.

Trump has made clear a goal for the America to build a sustained presence on the moon, both to facilitate resource extraction and to serve as a staging point for travel to the Red Planet.

Senate Vote and Political Dynamics

On This week, the Senate confirmed Isaacman's nomination with a decisive vote.

The President first withdrew the nomination in May, referencing a "thorough review of past connections".

At the time, the president was engaged in a dispute with Elon Musk, one of his biggest supporters, with whom Isaacman has professional ties.

Isaacman says he is now aligned with the presidential objective to harvest the moon, placing him in disagreement with Elon Musk, who has said that going to the Moon is a diversion from the primary objective of Martian exploration.

Vision for NASA

In the present global space race, countries are vying to exploit the moon's resources.

“Now is not the time for hesitation but a time for action because if we lose ground, if we make a mistake, we may not recover, and the consequences could shift the strategic equilibrium here on Earth,” he told lawmakers earlier this month.

The business leader sees fostering more commercial rivalry as crucial for achieving those targets, according to a recently disclosed memo laying out his plan for NASA.

In his testimony, he supported the blueprint, which he drafted when he was originally put forward, but clarified it was a work in progress.

His openness to multiple providers could also create a conflict with Musk. Last week, Isaacman praised the granting of a lucrative deal to Blue Origin, which is one of the few rivals of SpaceX.

In the strategy paper, he recommended NASA should forge stronger ties with research institutes, envisioning the agency as a "catalyst for research".

He highlighted the scheduled deployment of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope as a flagship example.

"Should we be approaching something extraordinary - like deploying the Roman Telescope - I will leave no stone unturned to get the program to the pad, even using my own resources if that's what it requires to achieve the discoveries," he remarked.

Personal Fortune

According to estimates, his fortune is valued at around 1.2 billion dollars, made mostly from his payment processing company and the divestment of his business that provided flight training and operated a collection of military aircraft.

The NASA administrator role will be his maiden role in government service, a contrast to the last two people who served as NASA chief.

He will take over from the former transportation secretary, who has served as temporary leader since the summer.
