We are checking video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to check the site of where the images originated was based on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
