This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: happy, varied, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Annually, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
