The Red Devils Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s forward line. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
