The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
