The Former President's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
