The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
At least 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.
The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the victims who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She told the events before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
