Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted just a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.
