Just as Storm Claudia hit the northwest the night before, Manchester City swept the visitors aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 triumph for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their leadership claims as they reinforced their position at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for United

This scoreline represented back-to-back league defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, leaving them seven points off the league leaders with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

United’s ability to juggle domestic and continental soccer with a thin team has been a widely debated topic since they earned a place in the European competition. Looking at the calendar, it always seemed this was the period that would seriously challenge this ability. Unfortunately for the visitors, they looked weary all game, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Lineup Adjustments

The United manager had sought to freshen things up with a several adjustments. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all added freshness, although the exclusion of the in-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines caused surprise.

Manchester City, in opposition, have fewer loading worries. Jeglertz made a single alteration from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

The pressure started to gather for Skinner and his team from the first whistle. This was a exhibition of the strength from City whose potent forward line manipulated and pulled the visitors apart with a superb initial 45 minutes showing that saw them net a trio in under half an hour.

They increased their advantage with another pair of goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was able to advance through the center from the back, the pitch opened up for City. The prominent Casparij collected the pass on the wing before sending a precise low cross for Bunny Shaw to force home. Shortly later, they had a third after a swift turnover in the ball saw Hemp given the room to drive a shot home from range.

Second Half

The primary change came from Skinner at the interval as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the contest. Ex- City player Jess Park came nearest, hitting the post, but the away team were creatively abject and did not manage to register a one shot on goal.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have increased their advantage when a delightful Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the winning team. Previously unable to overcome any opponent who placed above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against the Gunners and United to place them in a commanding position after the opening fixtures.
