The Senate on Tuesday quickly approved to a bill that will mandate the disclosure of official records related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a shift by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The White House relented after an extended period of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has followed the president since his comeback to the White House.
Swift Passage in Both Chambers
The Senate acted by unanimous consent, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, speeding up the process. Hours earlier, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a massive majority.
The public have endured sufficient delay. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer said in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to pass it unanimously. “Let the truth come out. Let transparency reign.”
Future Action
The measure next will be sent to Trump for his signature. He signaled on the previous day that he would sign the measure.
Though Trump has for months rejected the uproar over the authorities' approach of the scandal as a “political stunt”, he voiced approval for the House bill over the past few days, and stated he would give his assent if it comes to him.
Support and Opposition
Opposition lawmakers, along with survivors of Epstein and their representatives who were watching from a viewing area, cheered after the bill was approved. The sole “no” vote came from a GOP representative, who stated he feared the measure would reveal personal information of witnesses, those under scrutiny and others implicated in the investigation.
