Colombia's President Warns 'I Would Resort to Weapons Again' should United States Launches an Attack.

The US President and his Colombian counterpart have escalated the tone of their war of words, further raising tensions between the two countries following US forces attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates drug factories and processing labs and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Rising Tensions and Accusations

Addressing journalists on Sunday, the US president suggested comparable armed intervention against Bogotá, asserting the country faces serious problems and governed by a sick man who likes making cocaine and distributing it to the United States."

While Colombia stands as the world’s largest producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, elected two years ago, is in any way involved in the illicit industry.

A Deteriorating Relationship

This nation has long been a key ally of Washington in the fight against narcotics trade and benefited from cross-party backing in the US capital, but relations have soured markedly after Trump came to office.

Its narcotics trade is largely controlled by criminal organizations including the Clan del Golfo, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), the majority of whose members laid down arms subsequent to a historic peace agreement.

Petro's Strong Answer

In response to a query if military intervention like that in Venezuela was a possibility for Colombia, Trump said: "It sounds good from my perspective."

The Colombian leader, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle decades ago, rejected the accusations. "I am not illegitimate and certainly not a drug trafficker," he stated.

"He comments uninformed. End the false accusations," he expressed online.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will become numerous insurgents in the hills. And should they arrest the nation's leader, whom a significant portion of Colombians admires and supports, they will provoke the ‘jaguar’ of the populace," Petro warned.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

The president dedicated a period in his early life participating in the left-wing M-19 armed organization but is not believed he did not participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he took part in drafting the nation's constitution in 1991 subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He served as mayor of the capital city before being elected the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow not to touch a weapon again ... but for the homeland I will take up arms again," he vowed.

Reinforced Protection along with Cross-Political Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister reported that the president’s personal security was strengthened.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with the US president, but voices from all sides of the political spectrum have rejected the threats of American military action targeting Colombia.

Diplomatic and Economic Strains

American authorities revoked Petro’s visa following he encouraged US troops to ignore unlawful commands. In October, it placed economic restrictions on Petro, his wife and a number of close collaborators.

Concurrently as the US increased its troop levels in the Caribbean and targeting vessels thought to carry drugs to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US have also conducted strikes against vessels in the eastern Pacific region off the Colombian coast.
