Chernobyl Catastrophe Shelter Can No Longer Effectively Blocks Harmful Radiation, Requires Major Restoration – IAEA
A protective shield encasing the Chernobyl reactor core in Ukraine can no longer perform its primary safety function of containing radioactive material, as announced by the IAEA. This loss of function comes after a drone attack in February that blew a hole in the structure.
Structural Compromise from Drone Strike Degrades Containment System
A drone strike in February severely damaged the multibillion-euro “new safe confinement” structure. This enormous protective structure, built at a cost of €1.5bn with work finishing in 2019, was intended to seal off radioactive material for decades. A recent IAEA inspection last week confirmed that the drone impact had weakened the structural integrity of the steel arch.
The containment arch's main safety functions, such as confinement, are no longer operational, stated IAEA head Rafael Grossi. Grossi noted that the mission confirmed no lasting harm to key support structures or sensor systems.
Background Context of the Chernobyl Containment
The original 1986 explosion at Chornobyl – at a time when Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union – spewed radiation across Europe. During a frantic containment effort, Soviet engineers built a concrete “sarcophagus” over the damaged reactor, but it had a three-decade design life. The New Safe Confinement was erected to enable the future decommissioning of the old sarcophagus, the destroyed reactor hall, and the melted nuclear fuel itself.
Present Status and Required Actions
Although limited repair work has been done, the IAEA stressed that comprehensive restoration is essential. This is needed to stop additional deterioration and to ensure long-term nuclear safety. Ukrainian authorities had stated that a drone carrying a powerful explosive hit the facility, igniting a blaze and compromising the outer shielding.
