Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
